Governor Gregg Abbott issued a proclamation on Friday postponing the runoff election until July 14, 2020, in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. These runoffs were originally scheduled for May 26. Early voting will now begin on July 6, 2020.
Holding the runoff in May would cause the congregation of large gatherings of people in confined spaces and cause numerous election workers to come into close proximity with others. This would threaten the health and safety of many Texans.

Runoff for Kerr County Sheriff
This postponement will affect the countywide runoff race for the Republican nomination for Kerr County Sheriff. Candidates Eli Garcia and Larry Leitha will face off in a runoff and the winner will face Libertarian candidate Warren Funk in the November general election.
The Hill Country Community Journal reported statements from each candidate.
- Larry Leitha: “We will continue to monitor COVID-19 and keep everyone’s safety in mind first and will pickup pace again when it is safe. We will continue to stay focused as we learn to navigate in this new environment.”

We reached out to the candidates for any additional thoughts since Friday.
- Larry Leitha responded on Saturday morning: “I totally agree with the Governor’s decision to move the election. As Sheriff that should be one of our most important concerns public safety. We will continue to monitor this situation and pray for everybody. When my campaign staff and I feel it’s safe we will get back to work.”
- Eli Garcia responded on Saturday: “The health and wellness of our community is our number priority. I understand the Necessity and agree with the Governor’s decision.
